SPIES IN THE HIMALAYAS

A thrilling 1960’s CIA secret mission to the top of the world

DOCUMENTARY

The year was 1965, and Cold War paranoia was growing. The Pentagon and CIA were worried because China had recently conducted its first nuclear test, but intelligence was extremely limited.

So, in October, the Pentagon teamed up with India’s Intelligence Bureau (IB) in a clandestine mission to install a powerful listening device on Nanda Devi, the second highest mountain in India. To ensure the longevity of the device, it would be powered by as much plutonium as the nuclear bomb dropped on Nagasaki.

A group of 14 American and four Indian mountaineers was carefully assembled to carry the equipment to the summit of Nanda Devi.  But when the team reached Camp IV, at over 24,000 feet, a terrible blizzard and severe cold conditions forced a rethink. They decided to cache the device on the mountain, to await better conditions the following Spring. And when they returned, in May 1966, all the equipment had vanished.

More than half a century later, nobody knows what happened to the capsules. Until the plutonium deteriorates, which may take centuries, the device remains radioactive. Are these nuclear spy devices causing India’s floods?

Who else was there that night?

The story of John and Ann Bender’s marriage reads like a Pulp Fiction novel packed with every trope of the genre: astounding wealth, tales of alleged diamond smuggling, and bouts of madness set against the backdrop of a tropical paradise.” – The Daily Mail

BITCOIN BANDITS

How The World’s First Bitcoin Heist Went South

DOCUMENTARY

They do things differently in Iceland, where convicts treat prison like drop-in centres and high finance built life-changing fortunes before blowing them overnight.

With its cheap geothermal energy and low crime rate, the land of the northern lights has also become the world’s leading miner of digital currency, which means it’s also become a target for crypto theft. In 2017, a curious gang of criminal dissidents saw the opportunity of a lifetime turn into an international manhunt over five days and three international borders.

How did seven Icelanders steal more than £1.5 million worth of bitcoin mining equipment? And where are the machines now?
